Course Overview

In this course, the etiologies of cancer will be explored from a systems biology perspective. Each lecture will review current knowledge from recent and classical peer-reviewed literature. The course is divided into three parts. In Part 1, the role and interplay of genetic and environmental risk of cancer will be reviewed. Particular attention will be given to the types of genes that confer risks of various cancer types by well-characterized mechanisms.

In the second part, the lectures will focus on the evolution of ideas stemming from Hanahan & Weinberg?s ?Hallmarks of Cancer.? Students will read critiques and extensions of Hanahan & Weinberg?s concepts.

In the third part, these concepts will be explored in detail across a diverse range of cancer types

Students will leave the course with a deep appreciation of the general cellular and molecular pathogenesis of cancer as well as a command of recent knowledge of unique features of cancer etiology in a variety of specific tissues of origin.
